Description

Albumen print mounted on paper. Portrait of John Phillips, standing three-quarter length, turned and looking to left, his left hand resting on a chair back. Curved top corners to print. The print has a purplish brown colour, gold toned. The photograph is presumably one of those taken by Maull & Polyblank in 1860, when he was President of the Geological Society; otherwise its simplicity of style and plain backdrop might suggest one of the amateurs of the time such as C. L. Dodgson (Lewis Carroll).

John Phillips (1800-1874) was Deputy Reader in Geology at Oxford from 1853, and subsequently Reader and Professor; he was also Keeper of the Ashmolean Museum 1854-70 and first Keeper of the University Museum, Oxford, opened in 1860.
