Description

Engraving of 'The Great Orrery' made by Thomas Wright (see inscription), a large example of a 'grand orrery', with celestial hoops; the instrument depicted includes the signature 'Tho. Wright Fecit'. A line below the orrery advertises a 'Large Print of the Orrery with the Explanation', while above right is the advertising line 'Who makes Orrery's of different sorts as may be seen at his Shop in Fleet-street'. The print in this form is thus an advertising leaflet or flyer for Benjamin Cole, who succeeded to Wright's business in 1747. That it was issued at about that time is indicated by the orrery print from the Universal Magazine dated 1749 (14573), which is evidently copied from this image.
