Description

Carbon print mounted on card, within decorative embossed surround. Portrait of a woman, seated full length on a couch, her body in profile facing left, her head turned somewhat to front, her right arm resting on the end of the couch. Range of tones from grey to rich brown. The tall narrow format is most unusual. The photographer is presumably a member of the family of John Mercer, the calico printer and pioneer photographer (see 12670).
