Description

Gregorian reflector, copper alloy. Pillar and tripod stand with cabriole feet. Primary and secondary mirrors in speculum metal. Push-fit dust cover, screw-fit objective cell with 3 springs. Screw-fit eyepiece. Altazimuth mount, screw movements with square ivory handles. Silver plate with 2 crests and inscription. Focus by screw moving secondary, long rod and knurled knob at eye-end.

Telescopes of this type, with mirrors of polished metal, were popular among amateurs, including those who attended courses of lectures and demonstrations. This example is by the most successful maker of such instruments, James Short, who specialised in nothing but reflecting telescopes.
