Description

Experimental Fleming Valve with single vertically-mounted nickel-plated flat anode in single-loop filament, on polished black ebonite base, with ring-turned wood plinth, and three wires forming legs.

Marconi hired the electrical engineer and Professor at University College London, John Ambrose Fleming and his work on thermionic valves would be crucial to advances in tuning and so to the further development of radio. This valve is probably one Fleming had used for earlier experiments in 1889-90, but which he later applied to the application of valves in the detection of radio waves.
