Description
The scene shows Henry VIII giving the patent and charter to the newly amalgamated Barber Surgeon's Company of London in 1540, as painted by Holbein. The company engaged the engraver Bernard Baron to make a copy of Holbein's painting in 1734, presumably in anticipation of their bicentenary. It was the most highly paid commission of his career; he spent two years on it and received 150 guineas on its completion in 1736.
