Description
Small oblong album bound in brown half-leather and dark blue-green cloth. Flyleaves + 104 leaves, variously of ordinary paper and of dark green card + several stubs of pages (and of 3 photographs) that have been cut away. Contains 151 photographs, 2 halftones cut from a magazine or book, and 1 painting.
They are G. R. Kaye's photographs of Indian astronomical instruments and observatories (mainly at Jaipur, Delhi, Ujjain, and Benares), taken presumably over some years in connection with his several publications on the subject (published in 1918 and 1920), and perhaps compiled into the album at a later date. The photographs are mostly gelatine prints, and some are in poor condition. There are also 3 letters (added by Gunther) referring to Kaye's photographs (1929 and 1931); that from Mrs Kaye refers not to the album but to 'some films, or rather plates, of astrolabes' (other notes and photographs by Kaye, especially relating to astrolabes, are in the Museum's manuscript collection and reference files). See also some photographs from Kaye of Indian temples and carvings (11873).
