Description

In MS Gunther 10, f.160r, Hartwell House commonplace book, volume 2. Salted paper print from a calotype negative of John Robertson and Hugh Miller, seated nearly full length in profile either side a table, Robertson left posed as if writing, his head in profile looking down, Miller in lowland dress right posed as if reading, his head in profile. Strong brown except at the two edges, which are discoloured due to the adhesive. Captioned (beneath, on the album page) Hugh Miller and 'John Roberts', the wrong way around, with a later note to that effect. It belonged to Sir David Brewster, and was given to John Lee for his commonplace book along with two others on the facing page. Brewster and his wife visited Hartwell House from October 18 to 21, 1851, and are among the visitors who sign f.156v of the volume.

Hugh Miller (1802-1856), the flamboyant Scottish geologist, was famous for wearing his traditional Scottish lowland dress of tweed with plaid overblanket.
