Description

English pocket globe. First half of the 19th century.

Lacquered paper gores printed from engraved plates and coloured by hand; pivoted, in fish-skin covered case with brass catches and hinges. Inscribed, 'New Terrestrial Globe By T Harris & Son London.'; not dated.

Made from gores printed after 1798, as Tasmania is shown as an island; and before1820, when Parry's discovery of the north-west passage was made known. Pasted inside the two halves of the case are gores representing the constellations of the northern and southern hemispheres. These are inscribed, 'New Celestial Globe By T. Harris & Son London.'
