Description

Albumen print mounted on white-glazed card with bevelled, gilded edges and rounded corners. View of the front of Christ Church, with Tom Tower, looking down St Aldates from the opposite side a little above, the roadway in foreground, part of shops to right. Several figures stand on either side of the road, which is empty but for one small cart; another is parked in right foreground, the bowler-hatted carrier resting on it. Yellowy sepia, the tower and middle distance at centre paler than the edges. One slight surface abrasion. This magnificent and fairly large (about 7 by 11 inches) photograph is presumably part of a series of topographical photographs commissioned or retailed by Dring & Fage, who were in fact makers of drawing, mathematical, and measuring instruments.
