Early gelatine print. Informal group portrait of a young H. H. Turner (standing right), John Mullis (seated left), an unidentified young man, and two women, the elderly one resting her hand on the young man's arm, photographed outdoors in the corner of a private or college garden. Vertical format. High gloss and over-all yellowy sepia colour. Turner came to Oxford as professor of astronomy in 1893, inheriting Mullis, the observatory technician and odd-job man, who had been a retainer of the previous professor Charles Pritchard. The unidentified people seem likely to be Mullis's family.
