Description

Published portfolio, stiff (probably wooden) boards, red cloth with title 'The Moon | Rutherfurd and Proctor'. Principal contents are 3 large (approximately 13½ by 10½ inches) albumen prints mounted on card, showing the moon full, about half, illuminated on its left, and about half, illuminated on its right, respectively. Dark brown, cream coloured highlights. No printed captions, but the photographer's and printer's credit is blind-stamped on each image. Presumably the original contents as issued included material by R. A. Proctor, probably text or maps (see below). The other contents of the portfolio are 6 printed maps and illustrations of the moon, presumably not part of the work as issued: 'General-Karte der sichtbaren Seite der Mondoberflaeche ...' based on Beer and Mädler, by J. H. Mädler, Berlin, 1837; 'Chart of The Moon on the Stereographic Projection', plate XVIII, by R. A. Proctor; 'Map of the Moon, from the Mappa Selenographica of Beer and Maedler', plate XVII, by T. W. Webb; 'Bullialdus and the surrounding region. By Schmidt, of Athens'; 'Lunar Landscapes - "Full" Earth' and 'Lunar Landscapes - "New" Earth', plates XXI and XXII, white on black, views of earth as from the moon, both illustrations on one sheet, but 2 copies.

Lewis Morris Rutherfurd (1816-1892), an American amateur astronomer, was regarded by his English colleague and admirer Proctor as 'the greatest lunar photographer of the age'. His photographs were taken between 1858 and 1877.
