Description

A brass compendium with a combined nocturnal, lunar volvelle and universal equinoctial dial for latitudes 0°-80° (gnomon missing); a lunar volvelle and aspectarium; a horizontal string-gnomon dial, and a compass; and a table of the latitudes of 18 places. There is a single clasp to lock the instrument shut but none to keep it open with the upper leaf perpendicular to the horizontal base.

This compendium is engraved with ornamental designs, including illustrations of the Phaeton and Daedalus legends, of the story of Jonah and the whale, of astronomers using instruments and of shipbuilders at work.
