The book's tiitle page, list of illustrations, and preface do not mention that they are photographs, nor indicate their source - unusually for an early photographically illustrated book, where the fact is novel enough to be noted, and unusually for woodburytypes which are often identified as such. They are however the rich purply brown of woodburytypes with strong rich dark areas, no hint of yellowyness, and, although affected by the foxing of the pages they are mounted on, no sign of deterioration or fading.
