Description

Six-inch ivory sector, with brass hinge and the usual scales, signed 'Cail, Newcastle on Tyne'.

John Cail (f.1820s-40s) was a scientific instrument maker and retailer in the town and port of Newcastle. He most probably bought in standard items like this sector from makers to the trade in London; but examples of instruments bearing his name are rare.
