Primary inscriptions
"MICROMETER" and a monogram "IC [or CI]" or "IG [GI]" printed on the decorative front, with "10,000 x" written in ink in a blank circle. On the reverse is written "One hundred million squares | in the square inch" and (in a diferent hand) "C. Varley Collection"
Other inscriptions
A sketch on the accompanying (later) envelope indicates that the squares are ruled with two sets of orthogonal parallel lines running from the vertices of the diamond-shaped glass centre.
