Horary Gunter Quadrant, English, 17th Century

Inventory Number 45105

Acknowledgement: © History of Science Museum, University of Oxford, inv.45105

Item type
Object
Provenance
From the Strangways Collection (according to accompanying MS label; is this consistent with the inscription?)
Other inscriptions
On the arc edge is a an evidently lighthearted inscription in ink "R. T. GUNTHER'S GUNTER'S QUADRANT." Underneath the two surnames are their dates "1869 -19 " (left blank as Gunther was of course still alive) and "1581 - 16 ". Gunter died in 1626 and Gunther must have known this. Did he miss out Gunter's date of death simply as a joke, to maintain symmetry with his own dates?
