Compound Microscope with Case and Accessories, English, c. 1857

Two turned pillars, that stand on a flat horseshoe foot carry, the limb on trunnions. The mounts for the body, stage and condenser run in a dovetail slot that runs the length of the limb. The body and condenser can be racked up and down, to focus, by milled knobs on the rear of the limb. A mill headed screw on the underside of the stage adjusts the fine focus. Attached to the stage is a small screw to which the stage forceps can be attached. The eyepieces can be pushed into a draw tube in the monocular body. The eyepiece has two lenses and pushes into a draw tube in the monocular body. The nose on the lower end of the body has an internal thread for objectives. The stage is mechanical and a pinhole holds stage forceps on a steel pin with a cork plug. The condenser holds a rotating disk with four apertures and it is fitted with a cap with a blue filter. A plane mirror is set on the mount for the condenser. The fitted wooden case has a handle and contains the microscope accessories, including 3 objectives 1 1/2in, 4/10in and 1/4in; three eyepieces, one of which has a micrometer slot; dark well; stage forceps; live box; stage micrometer; cylindrical cardboard tube with 3 glass dipping tubes and a bottle of Canada balsam.
