Description

Card slip-case type box, not contemporary, contains 13 lecture-attendance and other cards or tickets for the medical curriculum at Edinburgh University, issued to John Duck, 1784-86, printed with manuscript additions; together with a photograph of another card for Joseph Black's chemistry lectures (1770), and a list of the original collection of 20 cards. The lecturers represented are Alexander Monro, Andrew Duncan, John Aitken, John Brown, William Cullen, Alexander Hunter & Archibald Hope (jointly), and Joseph Black, together with clinical lectures and attendance at the Royal Infirmary and the Lying-In Hospital. Other cards are a receipt for university dues and a library reader's ticket. Several of the cards have engraved illustrations, notably an ecorchee figure after Vesalius (Monro), an emblematic figure of motherhood with the Lying-In Hopital beyond, and a view of the Royal Infirmary.
