Description

Simple microscope with accessories in case, English, mid-19th century. This copper alloy microscope (.1) has a hollow cylindrical pillar standing on a hinge on a rectangular plate. A concave mirror in a horseshoe mount is set on the same hinge. The reverse side of the mirror is white plaster. The rectangular stage is mounted at the top of the pillar. It has a circular stage hole, three pinholes for accessories and a U shaped spring clip to hold slides. A double mill-edged knob on the side of the pillar, near the stage, racks a triangular post upwards from within the pillar. A split ring on an arm is screwed to the top of the post and objectives push into the ring. There are four objectives in a canister (.2), a glass slide (.3), stage forceps (.4), a bull's-eye lens on a steel pin with a copper alloy mount (.5), a specimen chamber on a copper alloy plate (.6), a steel pin on an ivory handle (.7) and two Lieberkühn in a canister (.8), with this microscope. The fitted mahogany box (.9) has a hinged lid, a locking mechanism and is lined with navy blue velvet. The key (.10) and a small cloth (.11) for dusting the microscope and accessories are also contained in the box.
