Description

Mary Somerville's compound microscope with accessories in case. Microscope (.1) has an oval-shaped, lead-weighted copper alloy base and is supported by a cylindrical pillar. The body tube is held by an arm attached to the top of the pillar, which has a tightening screw. Below the stage there is a condensing lens on an arm and below this is a rotating mirror. The case contains six glass slides with decorative light and dark green paper coverings (.2) four bone sliders (.3), a pin on an ivory handle (.4), a knife with an ivory handle (.5), a copper alloy eyepiece (.6), copper alloy tweezers (.7), two objectives (.8) and a postcard with a greyscale portrait in profile of Mary Somerville (.9). The wooden case (.10) has a hinged lid with a locking mechanism. The underside of the lid has a manufacturer's label stuck to it.
