Description

The instrument is supported on trunnions on a heavy tripod base. The angle of the limb can be locked in place with a tightening screw operated by a steel lever. The binocular body is carried on a rack and pinion on the upper part of the limb. The eyepieces drop onto tubes at the top of the body and a horizontal screw adjusts the inter-ocular distance. At the lower end of the body the rotating nosepiece carries four objectives. Mill-edged knobs on each side of the limb operate the coarse focus. Two smaller knobs on the limb control the fine focus. The circular stage is mechanical and movement can be measured on two scales. Below the stage a condenser with a variable aperture is mounted on a rack and pinion with a copper alloy knob for focusing. A copper alloy cylinder also extends below the stage and supports the plano-concave mirror. The wooden case also contains four dovetailed plates with threaded holes, a monocular body tube, an additional pair of eyepieces and four copper alloy objective canisters, three of these canisters match the objectives on the microscope.
