Painting (Oil on Canvas, Framed) of an Alchemist

Oil painting on canvas of alchemist in alchemist's shop, surrounded by the objects of his work, temporarily looking up from reading a book. Appears unsigned. In a painted black and gold frame. The frame is painted black and the moulding in gold - but areas of gesso and earlier gilding are showing through. Small areas of the painting appear to have been touched up and the whole appears to be re-varnished. One of a pair: see also Inventory No. 25498.
