Description

Carte de visite (albumen print mounted on card) of J. E. Marsh, head and shoulders, looking slightly to left, vignetted. He wears pince-nez spectacles. The mount is the black card with no printing on the back that became fashionable towards the end of the 19th century. The faint inscription on the back, written later in life by N. V. Sidgwick, is a valuable record of Sidgwick's indebtedness to Marsh, who coached him privately, a fact not recorded in biographies of Sidgwick. The same phrase 'My Father in Chemistry' is also written on the back of another photograph of Marsh (57523).
