Description
Gelatine print mounted on paper, the paper in carte de visite format. Portrait of J. E. Marsh, head and shoulders, looking to left in profile. He wears pince-nez spectacles. Black and white. The printed paper mount represents a late form of carte de visite as it neared extinction in the 1900s. The inscription on the back, written later in life by N. V. Sidgwick, is a valuable record of Sidgwick's indebtedness to Marsh, who coached him privately, a fact not recorded in biographies of Sidgwick. This detail and the same phrase 'My Father in Chemistry' are written on the back of another photograph of Marsh (91537).
