Description
Albumen print or early gelatine print. Copy of what appears to be a pen-and-ink cartoon headed 'Bodley Vivisection: Not in the Blue Book', showing Burdon Sanderson vivisecting Bodley's Librarian, presumably satirising a debate about vivisection in 1884. Signed within the image. One of 4 photographic copies of Oxford cartoons used by R. T. Gunther in his publications (others are 17203, 35198, 66924); neither the source of the photographs (which look older) nor the whereabouts of the originals are recorded.
