JJ Bausch and H Lomb, both German immigrants, formed a partnership making spectacles in Rochester, NY in the early 1850's.  Their first mass-produced microscopes appeared in 1874. In 1875 they hired Ernst Gundlach of Wetzlar, Germany, who was well known for his objectives.
