Description

Carbon print or matt gelatine print, sepia or pale brown colour. Snapshot of a game of mixed-doubles badminton being played on the deck of the ship en route to Australia for the 1914 meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science; the participants are Ernest Rutherford and Miss Banks (nearest) versus Doherty and Mrs Dixon, with the latter's husband H. B. Dixon (left) umpiring.

One of an unusually candid series of photographs featuring Rutherford taken by the Oxford chemist N. V. Sidgwick, who met and became friends with Rutherford on this trip (the others are 25468, 34685, 94495, 99484). For fuller descriptive and historical commentary see narratives.
