Description

Gelatine print. Candid portrait or snapshot of Ernest Rutherford, standing three-quarter length, in his shirt and braces, engaged in sports activities on the deck of the ship en route to Australia for the 1914 meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science.

One of an unusually candid series of photographs featuring Rutherford taken by the Oxford chemist N. V. Sidgwick, who met and became friends with Rutherford on this trip (the others are 25468, 26192, 34685, 94495). For fuller descriptive and historical commentary see narratives.
