Description

Five clear perspex. straight non standard rulers. These are models or demonstration scales made by Mr Whillock to illustrate various units of measurement, each with scratched or engraved linear divisions, some with labels, some with grains of barley attached. They all represent variations on the inch and foot measurements. There are also 2 typed information sheets, describing the rulers.

15149.1: Clear perspex ruler with 2 different inch-like divisions, one slightly over 1 inch & one c.1¼ inch, the same total length containing 12 & 10 units respectively, it is not labelled.

15149.2: Clear perspex ruler with 2 inch-like divisions, 12 & 10, but the total lengths are not the same, lower scale corresponds to 5 grains (grains attached) ; labelled ‘Paris Foot or Pied du Roi’ + ‘Northern Foot’ + ‘Indus Inch’ (latter label accompanies the 5 grains).

15149.3: Clear perspex ruler with 2 inch-like divisions similar, but represented in one line, one = 3 grains & one = 5 grains (grains attached), it is not labelled.

15149.4: Clear perspex ruler with 12 x 1 inch divisions, with 3 grains equalling 1 inch. It is labelled ‘Binary Divisions’ + ‘Dozenal Divisions’ + ‘English Inch of Edward I’ [a statute of Edward I defines the English inch in terms of barley grains].

15149.5: Clear perspex ruler with 12 divisions slightly smaller than an inch.

15149.6: 2 typed information sheets, describing the rulers. 1 is A4 size, the other is non-standard paper size.
