Presented by A. F. Walden, of New College, Oxford, in the 1920s or 1930s. It was given to him by S. Gilchrist Thompson (see Walden's provenance note on the back).
Primary inscriptions
Main title: "CHEMICAL LECTURES." Below title: "Designed & Published by T. Rowlandson, James St. Adelphi." Within the print are clues to the lecturer and location: in the pocket of one figure in the audience is a book entitled "Accum Lectures", and above the door at the back of the scene are the words "SURREY INSTITUTION".

Description

Uncoloured engraving on paper by Thomas Rowlandson showing a lecture by Friedrich Accum at the Surrey Institution, London. Accum was the Institution's chemical lecturer from 1803 until about 1810. Other comtemporaries who may be in the audience include Rudolph Ackermann, Sir John Hippisley, and Humphry Davy.
