Description

Stipple engraving, framed version of 48545 and 89293. The by-line is covered by the mount, but the engraving is by James Thomson, after a painting by S. Drummond. Accum is shown with a chemical apparatus for gas collecting, consisting of a cylindrical glass vessel connected by several brass connecters to a balloon-shaped vertical receiver. Framed and glazed.

Accum's Treatise on Adulterations of Food achieved great popularity when published in 1820, and the European Magazine profile and portrait appeared about the same time.
