Description

A hand-crafted wooden model of Cephalosporin C made by Edward Abraham, likely pre-1970. Edward Abraham and Guy Newton discovered and isolated this antibiotic in 1953 but did not determine its structure until 1959.

There are several loose atoms from the structure, including a nitrogen with hydrogen and one hydrogen atom. The structure as it was when donated does not appear to conform exactly to the structure for Cephalosporin C, there is a carbon atom attached where a nitrogen should be, there is red paint on the bond for this atom and so it is possible that the model has broken in the past and been incorrectly reassembled. The separate nitrogen atom could go into this part of the structure. It is unclear where the loose hydrogen atoms should be positioned.
