Description

Fitted wooden case, with hinged lid and two layers both lined with red velvet. Underside of lid is padded and also has a red velvet lining.

The top compartment lifts out with fabric handles at each end. Top compartment is fitted for multiple tools, most of which are missing. Compartment contains a bundle of surgical pins, a wax(?) rod with two rounded smooth ends and a rod with string wrapped around and natural sponge at one end.

Lower compartment is fitted for multiple tools. Compartment contains a contrepan and separate wooden handle, four wooden bobbins with white thread, a piece of wax, cleaning brush in ivory handle, three surgical hooks of different sizes attached to three linked chains, two curved needles one large and one small, two hooks with teeth, two urethral staves, two trocars, tortoiseshell-cased surgical folding knife, long metal needle with rounded tip, tool with wooden handle and two-pronged tip, metal turning key with two slots, wooden handled tool with metal shaft and blunt rounded end and flat metal urethral tool(?).

Left hand side compartment contains two tourniquets, a woven strap with three-toothed metal buckle and adjustable pad, key for wooden case(?), five small screws, milled headed screw and small bundle of gold thread. Also present is a handwritten note in ink on card and a business card for "William Henry Bellot M.D.".
