Description

Small varnished oil painting; canvas stretched over panel. In black painted /stained wooden frame with gold painted inset moulding. The painting is a portrait of Baron Jöns Jacob Berzelius, the Swedish chemist (1779 - 1848), showing his torso upwards, depicted in a roundel, Behind him is a depiction of the sky, and in the foreground on a shelf, books, spectacles and scientific equipment. Below the shelf is an inscription to Berzelius, with details of his life. The reverse of the frame is inscribed Jons Jakob Berzelius (1779 - 1848).

Four copper alloy fixings with screws and two eye hooks with a copper alloy hanging wire. More recent board is used as a backing.
