Description

"Portrait photograph of E. M. Nelson seated at a table using his Powell & Lealand microscope, a microscope lamp to right and various accessory lenses on the table. Framed and glazed. To the bottom right of the photograph is attached a slip of paper (probably cut from a letter) bearing the signature 'Edward.M.Nelson' to which the date 1912 has been added [by R. T. Gunther].

A variant of the photograph (12340), taken on the same occasion but with the eye closed and the fingers in slightly different positions, was reproduced to accompany Eliot Merlin's obituary of Nelson in Journal of the Royal Microscopical Society, 1938. Eliot Merlin states there that the photograph was taken in 1910.

Frame is painted black. Paper covering over backboard."
