Description

Surveyors used this device to measure a ‘chain,’ a unit of measure formed by 100 interconnected links. Every ten links is marked by a unique tag to allow the surveyor to gauge long distances. Named after its inventor, Edmund Gunter (1581-1626), Gunter chains were still in use well into the nineteenth century.
