Description

Stereoscopic collodion positives on glass (ambrotypes), enclosed. Portrait of a young man, seated full length, turned to left, looking towards the camera, holding a rifle in his left hand (its butt resting on the floor) and a wine glass in his right, his right elbow resting on a table containing various objects including jars, a mirror, and a statuette; his top hat is on the floor by his foot. The picture is a kind of still life as much as a portrait. Black and gold oval mat. Different widths of plate. The back is covered with a piece of leather, bearing a rough barely legible inscription identifying the subject as a member of the family (or families) of Carpenter & Westley, which implies the photograph was taken by the firm Carpenter & Westley. There is reason to believe that R. S. Clay acquired material for his collection from them, including photographs.
