Microscope with Accessories and Case by Nairne, London, c. 1745

The microscope's back plate has two holes for shutter screws and two winged screws to adjust the position of the rectangular mirror on the rear of the instrument. The body tube screws into the centre of the plate. A thread on the end of the body takes a screw-barrel assembly. A projection lens screws into the end of the barrel and a threaded inner cylinder, with a condensing lens in the end, moves the stage for focusing. The stage consists of three disks, one of which is shaped to hold glass phials, with a steel spring that holds them against the inner cylinder. There are six projection lenses, a Lieberkühn, a shutter screw, a low power lens in a blackened ivory setting, two pairs of copper alloy copper alloy forceps, two threaded rectangular plates, a wet cell with two glass plates and a copper alloy copper alloy pin. There is also a copper alloy handle, so the screw-barrel can be used as a hand held microscope, and two lenses to convert the solar microscope to a camera obscurer. The fitted case is oak with a fishskin covered box, lined with green velvet to hold the accessories.
