Description

Albumen print mounted on card, cabinet format; reddish brown tone. Slight remnant of protector tissue. William Benjamin Carpenter (1813-1885) was president of the Royal Microscopical Society in 1854-55, and author of the classic microscopy textbook The Microscope and its Revelations (1856 and subsequent editions). In addition to this photograph from the RMS archive, the Museum has various other mementos of him, including a collection of microscope slides (84922, 89360) and his stereoscope accompanied by stereoscopic photographs (17386).
