Description

Albumen print mounted on card. Horizontal format. A lathe with geared drive-wheel and machine tools including a cutting tool attached, a hemispherical piece of work held in the lathe, drive belts going to an (invisible) overhead drive shaft; a cloth mounted as temporary backdrop. A handwritten label propped on the lathe reads: 'Spiral Apparatus | and | Spherical Rest | T.[?]'. The instrument is the Holtzapffel lathe belonging to T. H. T. Hopkins (1833-1885), which he used in a workshop in an attic at Magdalen College. See accompaying Taunt photographs of objects that Hopkins turned on this lathe, 12724, 12725, and 12726.
