Description

Engraving issued to accompany an article in the Universal Magazine about 'Practical Chymistry'. Shows a laboratory with various different designs of stills, furnaces, and glass vessels, ancillary apparatus including tongs, crucibles, and mortar-and-pestle, exotic animals and plants hanging from the ceiling, and the chemist and his assistant; the chemist is seated and holds a pointing stick (similar to the teacher in the related print 41000). The apparatus is labelled with numbers and letters and so was described in the accompanying article; otherwise the scene appears archaic and stylised.

Has been folded, so comes from the magazine.
