Culpeper Type Compound Microscope and Accessories in Case, English, c. 1740

The instrument stands on an octagonal wooden box base with a concave mirror mounted at its centre. Three curved copper alloy legs support the stage and body tube. The stage has two pinholes, a keyhole slot and a recessed stage hole. Two spring clips, shaped to hold glass phials, are attached to the underside of the stage. The body tube is pasteboard covered in ray skin. The draw tube is pasteboard covered in green vellum and the focusing positions are marked. A lignum vitae fitting with the field lens and eye lens screws onto a lignum vitae collar at the top on the tube. The cylindrical, lignum vitae nose screws into a disk the base of the body and has an external copper alloy thread for objectives. Attached to the stage is a bull's-eye lens on a pin. The base has a drawer for accessories; these comprise of five objectives in copper alloy settings, a circular copper alloy spring stage, a lignum vitae and copper alloy cone condenser, a glass stage disk, a dished glass disk, stage forceps, a coiled copper alloy wire for making split rings, an ivory talc box containing mica disks, tweezer style forceps and three ivory sliders containing specimens. The pyramid case is mahogany and has metal fittings.
