Description
Screwbarrel and solar microscope with accessories and case, English, Late 18th Century. The instrument consists of a solar plate and mirror, which is a square copper alloy plate with a circular hole and an adjustable circular fitting to the take the body tube and an oblong mirror which attaches to the back of the plate, also on an adjustable fitting (.1); and a body tube with a conical nosepiece (.2). The case also contains a spring stage (.3), a rectangular wooden frame with a large central circular opening (.4), a wooden accessories tray (.5) that holds six objective lenses (.6), a Lieberkühn in a copper alloy can (.7), an ivory eyepiece (.8), an ivory handle (.9), a talc box (.10), three substage condensers in copper alloy slides (.11), an objective on a copper alloy arm (.12) and a copper alloy slider (.13); a wooden slider containing six insect wing specimens (.14), six ivory sliders containing plant and animal specimens (.15), four screws for attachment to shutter (.16), a copper alloy cap (.17), three glass phials (.18), Two receipts dated 27th May 1895 (.19), a copper alloy arm with rigid pincers, presumably to hold a paper-thin item (.20), a pair of two stage forceps (21), a pair of copper alloy tweezers (.22), two live boxes (.23), a glass plate (.24) and six hand-painted glass lantern slides of the long sliding kind, depicting comedy characters and several short stories (.25). They include a dog being chased by a cow, a castle on fire and four sailing ships, a man playing music to a dog, a hat-wearing dog perched on the shoulders of a wild boar and smoking a pipe and a man giving a ride to a small grey winged monster in a basket on his shoulders, who is dropping buns out of the basket. The characters include Harlequin, Punch and the Devil. The wooden case (.26) has a hinged lid, hook fasteners, a locking mechanism and compartments for the microscope and parts.
