Compound Microscope with Accessories and Case, by Adams, London, c. 1790

Microscope (.1): a turned pillar stands on a folding tripod base. A compass joint at the top of the pillar carries the square cross sectioned limb. The square stage is mounted on a sleeve with a rack and pinion, and moves on the limb for focusing. It has a recessed circular stage hole in a rotating disk, with two spring clips, set in the stage plate. There are two pinholes for accessories and a bracket to hold specimens. A sliding sleeve below the stage mounting carries a condensing lens and another sleeve at the lower end of the limb carries the plano-concave mirror. An arm with a threaded ring on the end is mounted on a rack and pinion mechanism at the top of the limb. The mechanism pivots giving the body 'aquatic' movement. The narrow nosepiece of the body tube fits the thread. The body (.2) has an eyepiece and a field lens. Objective lenses screw onto the underside of the ring. The accessories comprise eight objectives, two with dust caps (.3), four lenses in Lieberkühn (.4), an extra field lens (.5), an extra eyepiece (.6), two substage cones (.7), a superstage condenser lens on a pin (.8), two ivory talc boxes (.9), copper alloy forceps (.10), four types of stage forceps (.11), two live boxes (.12), four glass plates (.13), two watch glasses (.14), a copper alloy collar (.15), a knife and a pin on ivory handles (.16), a wet cell (.17), a fishplate (.18), two glass phials and a stirring wire (.19), an accessory arm articulated with six ball joints (.20), eleven ivory sliders (.21), five wooden sliders (.22) ten opaque wooden sliders (.23), a wooden plate and black and white disk (.24). The supports in the fitted, mahogany case are faced with green felt (.25). It has a hinged lid with hook fasteners and a locking mechanism.
