Description

.1: The microscope is carried on trunnions on the copper alloy and mahogany base. The heavy limb is also of copper alloy and mahogany. For coarse focusing a triple mill-edged knob extends and retracts a bar, with a triangular cross section, on which an arm holding the body is mounted. Fine focus is effected by a lever at the rear of the limb that acts on the stage. The body tube is angled near the eyepiece and is set in a collar with four screws to adjust alignment. The nosepiece is fitted with a revolving mounting for three objectives. The circular stage has a spring clip to secure specimens and a rack and pinion mechanism at its edge enables the stage to be rotated. An illuminating prism is mounted on a semi-circular dovetailed groove that allows it to be positioned above or below the stage.

.2: Condenser with a screw on objective by C. Baker surrounded by a removable lens collar, an iris diaphragm and a blue filter on a sliding arm at the base.

.3: Plain copper alloy body tube.

.4: Two eyepieces with lenses and body tubes. On both the eyepiece section pulls off and beneath this there are two glass lenses attached to either end of a copper alloy body tube. The eyepieces are labelled '2' and '3', '2' eyepiece is distinctly taller.

.5: Wooden case with a copper alloy fold out handle, lock and hinges. There are purple leather lined wooden fittings inside the case and on the inside of the door for fitting body tubes, objectives and the microscope in place. Inside the case are two notes, one is a former display label giving details of the 'Grubb Dublin' microscope and the other is a note with details about the original owner, 'Thomas Ruddy, 1842-1912.
