Description
Carte de visite (albumen print mounted on card) of a printed portrait of Abelard, head and shoulders, vignetted, in romantic pose. Companion of 63555, the pair showing Peter Abelard and Heloise, the 12th-century couple whose love affair was legendary. One of a series of 'Portraits Historiques' issued by the Paris photographer Neurdein (52774, 68945, 94207) and by the related studio of Charlet & Jacotin (see also 63555, 80957). Charlet was in fact a pseudonym of J. C. A. Neurdein (1806-1867).
