Description

Carte de visite (albumen print mounted on card) of a printed portrait of Heloise, head and shoulder, vignetted, in prayerful or penitent pose. Companion of 54244, the pair showing Heloise and Peter Abelard, the 12th-century couple whose love affair was legendary. One of a series of 'Portraits Historiques' issued by the Paris photographer Neurdein (52774, 68945, 94207) and by the related studio of Charlet & Jacotin (see also 54244, 80957). Charlet was in fact a pseudonym of J. C. A. Neurdein (1806-1867).
