Description

Binocular microscope with accessories and case, by Baker, London, c. 1875-1900. This copper alloy instrument (35921.1) stands on trunnions on a flat tripod foot that is inscribed with the maker's name. The limb has a rectangular cross section. A rack and pinion, operated by two mill-edged knobs on the rear of the limb, extends a triangular, bar supporting the optical components. The binocular body mounted is on an arm screwed to the top of the limb. A mill-edged screw on the arm moves a lever mounted on the body that extends or retracts the nose for fine focusing. The stage is mechanical and the stage plate has a rectangular stage hole, two pin holes for accessories and a fixed bar to support specimens. A rotating disk with four apertures and a click-stop movement is attached to the underside of the stage by a bayonet mounting. A sleeve on the lower end of the limb holds the plano- concave mirror in a horseshoe mount. There are two eyepieces (35921.2) and an objective with a copper alloy canister (35921.3) with this microscope. The case (35921.4) is mahogany with a leather carrying strap. It has hinged doors with locking mechanisms on both sides. It has a length of light brown string tied round it. The key to the case (35921.5) sits in the lock.
